Ukraine's relationship with Bitcoin gained global attention following Russia's invasion on February 24, 2022. Within hours of the invasion, the Ukrainian government and affiliated organizations began receiving cryptocurrency donations from around the world. The official Twitter account of Ukraine posted Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT wallet addresses on February 26, 2022, making it the first national government to publicly solicit cryptocurrency donations during wartime.

The crypto donations poured in from individuals, DAOs, and crypto companies globally. Alex Bornyakov, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, oversaw the effort to convert donated crypto into military supplies, including bulletproof vests, night vision equipment, medical supplies, and drones. The Aid for Ukraine initiative, launched in partnership with crypto exchange FTX (which handled fiat conversion before its collapse) and the Kuna exchange, processed tens of millions of dollars in the first weeks alone. By mid-2022, Ukraine had received over $100 million in cryptocurrency donations across all tokens.

The BTC figures tracked for Ukraine on this site reflect holdings declared by Ukrainian civil servants in public asset declarations, as required by Ukrainian anti-corruption law, rather than the government's official treasury. Ukraine legalized cryptocurrencies in February 2022, days before the invasion, establishing a regulatory framework under the Ministry of Digital Transformation. The country has continued to develop its digital asset policies, viewing crypto as both a wartime fundraising tool and a component of its broader digital economy strategy.
