About Nexon

Nexon Co., Ltd. (TYO: 3659) is a Japanese-Korean video game company founded in 1994 by Kim Jung-ju in Seoul, South Korea. The company is a pioneer of free-to-play online gaming and is best known for titles like MapleStory, KartRider, and Dungeon&Fighter. Nexon is headquartered in Tokyo and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Founder Kim Jung-ju, who passed away in February 2022, built Nexon into one of Asia's largest gaming companies with annual revenue exceeding $3 billion.

In April 2021, Nexon purchased 1,717 BTC for approximately $100 million at an average price of roughly $58,226 per Bitcoin. The purchase represented less than 2% of the company's total cash and equivalents at the time. Nexon's CFO Owen Mahoney described Bitcoin as a way to protect shareholder value and maintain the purchasing power of the company's cash holdings against currency devaluation and inflationary pressures.

Nexon's Bitcoin acquisition made it one of the first major Asian public companies outside the crypto industry to add Bitcoin to its corporate treasury. The company took a significant impairment charge on its Bitcoin holdings during the 2022 bear market under previous accounting rules, but continued to hold its position. Nexon's purchase was notable for applying the corporate treasury thesis pioneered by MicroStrategy to a large-cap Asian gaming company.
